MINIMUM WAGE/REMOVAL OF OIL SUBSIDY/DEREGULATION OF THE OIL SECTOR/INCREMENT OF PETROLEUM PRICES/BPE PROBE.

All the aforementioned are interwoven, because oil as the number one nation resources is a means to an end. To actualize minimum wage payments of #18000, the proceeds will have to come from the sales of crude oil. Most public enterprise that was privatized in the last dispensation, the means for setting them up comes from crude oil. As an economist I belong to the group that is not in support of total privatization of the Nations strategic industries. Instead of outright Privatization, why not Commercialization? In most of the developed countries despite the fact that  their economy is deep rooted in privatization, a sizeable portion of their Strategic Industries were still been controlled by both the Government and the Private led organization. This is commercialization.
The idea behind deregulation is to make petroleum products cheaper. However this is not likely to happen, going by what is currently been experienced in the nation’s oil sector. Presently the four refineries hardly perform to full capacity. So it will be very difficult for Nations refinery to compete favorably with the independent marketers, thereby bringing down the price level. Bearing in mind that this product is an international product, suffice it to say that people will only sell based on the prevailing market price, since it is the forces of demand and supply that determines the price. Deregulation can only work in an atmosphere whereby the nation’s refineries are working at optimal level. In fact the proposed deregulation of the oil sector has failed already before its commencement. The premise is to make the product cheaper by deregulating. Then why proposing an increment in oil price again? Why not allow the market forces to determine the price level. The government must find a way to stop the sharp practices that has made it difficult to feel the impact of oil subsidy from the past by ending the nefarious activities of some people who are siphoning the nation’s resources through this means.
The above argument makes me want to support the belief been held by some people that the impact of oil subsidy has never been felt by anyone in this country. Oil subsidy as economy policy in Nigeria only exists on paper. For those clamoring for its removal, they know the reason why they are saying so. Why don’t they tell us in clear term those who they have discovered are responsible for the diversion of this fund year in year out. What about the money being expend yearly for Turn around Maintenance on the Nation’s Refineries with nothing to show for it. Removing the subsidy will lead to nothing except hyper inflation cum stagnation, and this will have multiplier effect on the polity. The president should apply wisdom here.
Listening to the arguments of both the Lower and Upper chamber on the activities of Bureau of Public Enterprises, the body set up to oversee the privatization exercises gladden my heart. It has become crystal clear that what actually happened was outright stealing of the country’s resources by some of group of people. I do belief that what we heard them discussed is not just mere rhetoric, but words that is going to be matched with action.
In fact it gives me a great concern listening to the arguments put forward by some states for why they might not be able to pay the minimum wage. I would like to sound a note of warning here especially to all the Governors of the states that are not been controlled by the ruling party. Just recently the party gave instructions to all the states under its jurisdiction to start paying the minimum wage. I think the party is trying to score a political point here, so other parties beware. You just have to brave up and work harder to increase your Internally Generated Revenue and cut down on frivolous expenses. Please you should copy the attitude of Governor of Imo State, Chief Rochas Okorocha.
Talking about wastefulness. At this juncture I would like to bring my experience in the Maritime sector to fore. Most people are not aware that Crude Oil has about eight derivatives, and all of them are hot cake in the international market. These products include PMS (Petroleum Motor Spirit) generally referred to as petrol, AGO(Automotive Gas Oil),LPFO(Low Pour Fuel Oil},HPFO(High Pour Fuel Oil) generally referred to as Black oil, DPK generally referred to as Kerosene, Aviation Fuel, Naphtali and lastly Bitumen. All these products are in high demand in the international markets especially whenever any of the producing countries especially OPEC member country is under political or economic turmoil, their respective prices are bound to rise.
So tell me how come the nation found it difficult to meet all her exigencies? The bitter truth is we are a wasteful country. Our leaders should change their ways. Remember I said I would have done a write up on these issues; the truth is I was looking for a direction and wisdom on how to present the issue to all. Thank God I finally see the solution to the Nations problem, and the answer lies in the hand of both the Upper and the Lower chambers. The solution does not lie with the President, though he is an Executive President, the truth is the entire Nations problem from time immemorial can be solved. All the wrongs can be right by both the House of Representatives Members and the Senators if they so which.
How will they attain this lofty height? By being a shining example to all. Leadership is about service. So if you claim you are serving us and you are there as people representative, then you should do what is right. If you as a legislature decided to do what is right other arms of the Government are bound to follow suit. The truth is that we as a nation are very wasteful, the Government expends so much on frivolities, and the question is why. Though immediately you came into office the speaker Honorable Tambuwall announced that you have decided to cut down your salaries from 100% to 60%.The senate President also confirmed it. This is still not enough, if you truly are sincere and you have the interest of masses at heart then its time to retrace your steps and addressed these issues of corruption that has eaten deep into our fabrics, which has also led us to where we are presently. The problem is now systemic in nature. Remember you got there through our mandate, the usual practice of winner takes it all and the sharing of the nation resources with the thinking of having a share of the national cake is very wrong, and should put a stop to it. What the former Speaker of house of representative in person of Honorable Dimeji Bankole did was not a surprise to most Nigerians, because we have been expecting it. It is the usual practice and the dictum is (chop I chop) live and let live. Honestly all these have to stop if truly you want this Nation to move forward and have direction. Nigeria state is now a country of everyone for himself and God for us all. However I have to commend the two houses based on the qualities of their argument on the floor of the house recently. To be sincere I was very happy with the house on their discussion over agriculture, both the mover and all those that contribute to the discussion did a yeoman job. Mentioned should also be made about their discussion on the activities of the Bureau of Public Enterprise. This only show that hope is not lost, probably Nigerians can still count on you. In order for us to have faith in you, you must slash your wages and all other fringe benefits to 20% from the current 60%.Formerly the total package in a month for a senator was #24million and house of representative #20m, by my own calculation a senator presently earns#14.4m while house of representative member earns #12m.This amount is till too much. If its 20%, a Senator will earn #4.8m while an Honorable will earn #4m .This is enough for a month. Unless you wanted to stick to the axiom “we must have a share of the cake”. Please shed your weight for the sake of this country. If truly you are committed, faithful, loyal and honest to this nation with all your hearth and strength, then you must be ready to defend her unity before it disintegrate. Remember the prediction of United States of America, 2015 is just around the corner, or you think it can never happen. Think. The former President once claim that the lawmakers are the real problem of this country, I belief he has a reason for saying so, but as for me I belief you are the solution.
In conclusion whatever becomes of the Nigeria states in the next ten years, either good or bad, Nigerians know who to be blame or praised. Thank you.

BOKOHARAM

For some time now I have not put pen to paper to express my view on issues that has generated lots of arguments in various quarters. The nature and manner in which some of these issues have been treated is some how confusing and at the same time very disheartening. Let me quickly point out these issues and see if solutions can be proffer.
The first has to do with the death of OBL.As a practicing Muslim; I still found it difficult to understand the cause this man was fighting for till he died. I belief a good Muslim will never agree with the cause the man stood for during his life time for reasons we are all aware of. I had to made a reference to OBL has a result of the activities of a religious group known as BOKO HARAM in the country lately. As I have mentioned in some of my write ups in the past that most of the challenges the nation is currently witnessing especially security wise is politically motivated. Though attempts is currently been made to address the grievances of this religious group. Unfortunately it seems they are bent on continuing their dastardly activities. From what I have been made to understand, BOKOHARAM means western education is fraud. If this is so then why are they using bomb which happens to be the product of western education to perpetrate their devilish acts and unleashing terror on the polity? What of the killing of innocent people? This is why I will never agree or support anyone, or group of people hiding under the cloak of religion to perpetrate terrorist act.
Nigerian Muslims have a lot of work to do. If we want people to belief that Islamic religion is a religion of peace, then we should be ready to condemn the activities of these people. The political classes up north and the Northern Emirs must come out and speak against the activities of this religious group out-rightly in order to clear their already tarnished image. Tongues are wagging and people are already pointing accusing fingers in the direction of the Northern leaders. My only advice is that they should take a cue in the murder of some of the political and religious leaders who have supported this group in the past. It is very clear that they are not ready to engage in dialogue, they do not even want anyone to mediate in the matter going by the recent killing of a faction leader of the group just because he granted a former President audience.Regrettably enough the religious group claimed they are not responsible for the death of the faction leader. The question is who did?
All these are happening just because power has shifted down south. So who is to blame for this? PDP of course. They brought this upon the whole country because of their Zoning arrangement.
There are other dissent groups in the south who have also put the nation in a bad mood in the past due to their terrorist activities, why are they not likened as Christian fundamentalist. Muslim leaders wake up from your slumber and take pain to correct whatever is wrong with this religion of ours. I belief something is wrong because I still can not comprehend what they must have told Mutallab before he agreed to carry out hara-kiri.
Muslim world think and practice what you preached. If truly our religion stand for peace then the religion doctrine as stipulated in the Holy Quran should be uphold. I do not belief that Islamic religion is premised on corruption. However the corruptive tendencies and behavior exhibited by the leadership of some Muslim countries in recent time should be a concern to the Muslim world. We are a living witness to what has happen in Egypt,Yemen,Libya,Bharain,Tunisia and Yemen just to mention a few.
So as an advice to the Islamic religion leaders up north, any teaching that is divisive and likely to bring chaos should not be condone. It is high time for them to put a stop to incessant killings that usually occur among the Muslim and Christians. It is very embarrassing seeing the upholder of the two faiths going up in arms against each other. Enough is enough. Nigerians are tired.
Putting an end to the spate of bombing in the northern part of the country, I think the onus rest on the shoulder of the Northern elders and the spiritual leader of the Islamic religion in the country. We hope the issue will be addressed and treated with the urgency and importance it required. Thank you.

SOUTH WEST GOVERNORSHIP/HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY ELECTION RESULTS

Yesterdays election results in Ogun and Oyo state has shown clearly that people are tired of PDP government in the two states. The people are more than happy with the outcome of the result. The results was not declared until late in the evening, and our joy knew no bound when the Returning  Officer eventually announced the results couple of minutes after nineteen hundred hours, and the entire people of the state went into frenzy jubilation saying the waiting  is worthwhile. Is it our suffering under the scorching sun that we will mention off or our experience with some people that were bent on forcing people to vote for a particular candidate by offering the voters bribe in a public glare, and this pervades the entire polling booth across the states. Reports confirmed the arrest of well known individuals who were caught with ballot papers. Actually the status quo would have remained the same, but we give God the glory.
At this juncture I would like to impress it on the incoming government both in Oyo and Ogun  state to take a cue from Lagos and Osun state. The truth is people in the south west decided to make this deserved changes in the two states based on the performance of Governor Fashola and Governor  Aregbesola. So we expect the the two incoming governors to make sure they do everything within their capacity to achieve what the two ACN governors have been able to achieve in terms of  their performance even if not tried to surpass them.
The people of the two states expect their incoming governors to solve the problem of youth unemployment, decayed infrastructural facilities, educational problem, food shortages due to problems in the agricultural sector, housing problem, energy and problem associated with provision of adequate supply of pipe borne water.
We believe that with our unflinching stand and resolve to give you our mandate to steer our affairs for the next four years, you will not let us down. As a quick reminder you must have it at the back of your mind that it is only your service interms of your performance in delivering the dividend of democracy through various developmental programs which is expected to reflect on the entire citizen of the states in no short time will earn you the second term ticket and not intimidation, bribery, and violent act few days before the 2015 election. A word they say its enough…………………………………..
For people who have been following me on my Blog, I hope you will now agree with me that after all I am not just blabbing. If you recall what I postulate in my write ups (Political Issues In Nigeria before 2011 Election) concerning the recent happenings in the ruling party and the changes that has just been effected through the peoples voting power, then this will serve as a wake up call to the party leaders in Nigeria that people are tired o looters camouflaging as leaders.
On a final note, and this still bothers me to say the least. The President should found a way out to demonetize the Nations politics. Your persistent slogan before and after the election was your desire t transform the country, economically, politically and putting he Nation n a pedestal where she belongs in the comity of Nation. How do you intend to achieve this with the way government is being run in this country? Remember you pledge just a term, but the truth is if you are able to perform the unthinkable, I mean if the Nigeria Nation should work under your leadership, belief you me, I trust my people they would gladly throw back the mantle of leadership on your lap and ask you to continue.
I pray that all of our leaders that have just been voted into office will receive grace and ability to perform creditably well from God. Amen.
 Thank You.

FALL OUT FROM NIGERIA PRESIDENTIAL POLL

The world has spoken and the verdict has been given. The incumbent President was returned as the number one citizen to steer the affairs of the Nigerian nation for the next four years. He scored about twenty three million out of the total number of the vote casted. He came tops in twenty three states and won the required twenty five percent in thirty one states, Federal capital inclusive. The CPC candidates came second with twelve million votes, winning in fourteen states and scoring the required twenty five percent in sixteen states of the federation. The ACN candidates came third winning in one states and scoring the required twenty five percent in four states. So congratulations Mr. President.
With the announcement of the President as the winner of the election an orgy of violence break out both in the core North and the North central. There are three reasons responsible for this.
Firstly the perceptions of some Northerners’ as to the fact that it is still their turn to remain in Aso Rock remain unshaken. So when their candidates lost the PDP presidential primary, the CPC candidates seems to be their last resort. Immediately after the PDP presidential primary, one can recall that the former VP belief the election was rigged.
On the day of the election while watching news on the nations television stations, the CPC candid dates claim that a day preceding the election day, he heard a report that aircraft were moving ballot boxes throughout the country and that they were actually thumb printing inside the aircraft. We all now the pedigree of the CPC candidates and its primary constituency, it’s going to be fool hardy to ask him to discard his source.
Lastly the electorate in the Northern part of the country found it difficult to believe the voting pattern that came out of the south south and the south east of the federation. They did not belief that eighty percent of the total registered voters can participate in an election where only about forty percent came out to vote in other part of the country. This is exactly what pervade most of the south eastern states.Infact in some states in the south east the President scored about ninety nine percent, while the CPC candidates scored less than thousands. However to my own submission I think it is possible. The President happens to be their own kind, so it presupposes that the people are expected to troop out in large number and vote for him just as thy did up north for CPC candidate. My brothers and sisters up north should not forget that the Vice president is of their own, so it is possible for the President to score as high as he did up north even then twice now he had failed to win his ward. Also the general belief among Nigerians is that the President is a good person, but unfortunately he his in a thieving party.
My observation in the Presidential election was that the security was a bit relaxed compared to what we experienced in the National assembly election. We hope this mistake is not going to be repeated during the Gubernatorial and State assembly poll. Their existed a clear cut intimidation of electorate in he last election In some areas in my state. People were been asked to vote for a particular party and bribe were been offered in the process.
On a last note I believe all the claims and counter claims been made by the CPC should be taken to a law court where their case can be established there by allowing the rule of law to take its course. As for my brothers and sisters up north, they should have waited till the next election and massively voted for the candidates of their choice to show their grievances. Burning of houses and killing of innocent citizens is not the right way.Learnt that the Palace of the Emir of Kano was also touched, this is a new dimension to the happening in the north and this gives a great concern. Check out what is happening in the Muslim world in recent time. Hope you are getting my drift? Please all the ruling Emirs especially the Sultan should do something urgently to stem the tide of this ugly trend.
Thank you.
